Essential String Trios

Image: David Finckel, Arnaud Sussmann, Paul Neubauer

This program brings together three of the foremost string players on the Chamber Music Society roster–violinist Arnaud Sussmann, violist Paul Neubauer, and CMS Co-Artistic Director, cellist David Finckel–for an extraordinary showcase of works for string trio, a genre considered by connoisseurs even more demanding for performers than the string quartet.

Beethoven’s dazzling G major Trio, filled with buoyant energy and charm, opens the program. This is followed by the preeminent twentieth century example of the genre: the dramatic, yet lyrical Trio by Krzysztof Penderecki. The program concludes with Mozart’s extraordinary and majestic Divertimento, his first and only music for string trio, and a work filled with uncommon richness and intensity that many consider to be one of his most sublime compositions.

Beethoven: Trio in G major for Violin, Viola, and Cello, Op. 9, No. 1
Penderecki: Trio for Violin, Viola, and Cello
Mozart: Divertimento in E-flat major for Violin, Viola, and Cello, K. 56
