Urbanus

Meng Yan, Response by Adam Frampton

URBANUS was founded in 1999 by partners Liu Xiaodu, Wang Hui and Meng Yan. Recognized as one of the most influential architecture practices in China, the firm focuses on urban realities in their research and built projects, seeking architectural solutions to emerging urban problems. They are known for sensitivity to urban historical and social structure, integration of resources and effectiveness in responding to the complicated urban environment.

Meng Yan is Principal in charge of Design at Urbanus, he has led many of the firm’s award winning projects. Meng’s work has long focused on the key issues of China’s urban development including rapid urbanization in Pearl River Delta, future high-density urban building typologies, Urban Village regeneration in Shenzhen, and preservation of the historical area in Beijing. He received his Bachelor and Master’s degrees of Architecture from Tsinghua University, and Master’s degree of Architecture from Miami University. Meng has served as a visiting professor at Syracuse University and taught at the School of Architecture at the University of Hong Kong. He was chief curator of the Shenzhen Pavilion in 2010 Shanghai Expo and is one of three chief curators for 2017 Shenzhen-Hong Kong Urbanism\ Architecture Bi-City Biennale.
