Alexander Gray Associates is seeking a general gallery intern prepared to commit to an intensive, hands-on, gallery training internship.

This internship offers the right candidate an opportunity to obtain and develop professional experience. The internship is designed to immerse the intern in multiple aspects of a contemporary gallery business, and to offer a hands-on educational experience. Candidates must possess a friendly and professional manner with strong organizational skills, passion for contemporary art, excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Candidates must be highly detailed, personable, well-presented, well-organized, outgoing, be able to follow procedures accurately, and have an exceptionally strong, rigorous work ethic and focus. This internship entails performing and learning a wide range of duties which may include: archival, telephone and visitor reception, staff support, art handling, work with art inventory software, updating artists’ exhibitions records, updating website, interfacing with artists, participating in evening opening receptions and special events, assisting with exhibition and viewing installations, maintaining clean appearance of gallery and offices.

The selected candidate will spend the first week with intensive training, followed by professional hands-on work with ongoing learning. There are no vacations or personal days off available during the internship. Interns are expected to honor the full commitment for the duration of the internship period. This internship is ideal for preparing oneself for a position as a gallery assistant. MA preferred, BA required, with primary study in one of the following areas: Art History, Museum Studies, Arts Management, Fine Arts, Library Science, or Curatorial Studies. Candidates without the minimum of a completed BA will not be considered. Internship period: Now through mid-summer. Schedule: Tuesday-Saturday 10:30 am - 6:00 pm plus evening opening receptions and special events. Hourly, minimum wage. Computer skills that are absolute: fluency in Mac platform with MS Office and/or Apple Pages. Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and gallery management or database software is a plus.
