Columbia Night: Junk

Join the Arts Initiative and the Columbia Alumni Association Arts Access at Lincoln Center for Ayad Akhtar's ('02SOA) new play JunkColumbia Night attendees are invited to a special discussion with Ayad Akhtar following the performance. Additional speaker details will be announced soon.

In Akhtar's new play, he takes on the high-flying, risk-seeking, teetering financial world of the 1980s. The lead character, financier Robert Merkin, draws more than a little from the real junk bond kings of the day. Merkin is attempting to take over an iconic American manufacturing company, changing the rules as he goes. With his brilliance matched only by his financial swagger, Merkin sets in motion nothing less than a financial civil war, pitting magnates against workers, lawyers against journalists, and ultimately, pitting every one against themselves. This is a play about how, while most of us weren't watching, money became the only thing of real value.

Steven Pasquale (The Bridges of Madison County and TV’s “Rescue Me”) leads the large cast as Robert Merkin. Director Doug Hughes (The House in Town at LCT, and Tony winner for Doubt) brings it all to life in the Beaumont with John Lee Beatty (sets), Catherine Zuber (costumes), Ben Stanton (lighting), Mark Bennett (original music and sound) and 59 Productions (projections).
