Overview

Directions for Our Youth, Inc. (DFOY) is a non-profit community-based youth development organization providing out-of-school-time programming in New York City for young people enrolled in grades K-12. Our mission is to engage young people as active partners in their own development as they seek to become thriving, self-sufficient adults and agents of change within their local and global communities. DFOY provides over 1,200 students with high-quality content-drive programs encouraging educational enrichment, career awareness, civic engagement, and personal development.

Visual Arts Activity Specialist: Activity Specialist’s primary responsibility is to design and lead arts enrichment activities for youth participants. We are seeking creative professionals with experience working with the youth in video making, photography, story telling, drawing, sketching and/or painting.

 

Support and Supervision

The Instructor will report directly to the Team Leader.

 

Responsibilities

Teaches participants skills in an area of expertise

Responsible for implementation of activity lesson plans

Attend all staff meetings and trainings, including but not limited to DFOY Academy.

Ensure that all attendance sheets are collected at the end of each program day, and numbers are forwarded to the Team Leader

Ensure all participants are following agency and program norms associated with appropriate behavior.

Works with program Team Leaders to identify participants who may require additional assistance

Ensuring that program participants are engaged in daily activities and programming

All other duties required to ensure the safety and security of all participants

Track and support participant academic growth and development

Must be available Monday through Saturday


Qualifications

Proficiency in Visual Arts, implementation of Visual Arts instruction, experience in the Visual Arts field.

Strong intra/interpersonal skills.

Strong organizational and prioritization skills that leads to a high level of professionalism.

A team player with demonstrated commitment to working with youth and young adults.

Bi-lingual (Spanish preferred) is a plus, but not required.

Certified/ Licensed teacher by the State of New York (preferred, not required) in Academic Support and Educational enrichments.

Completion of DFOY Academy Pre-Service Training

Organizational Fit

The Instructor is a member of the Directions for Our Youth staff at all times and understands that all conduct must reflect the highest level of professionalism.

The ideal candidate possesses excellent written and oral communication skills and attends all mandatory staff meetings/trainings/conferences. The FALL program hours are between 2:00pm – 6:00pm, Monday through Friday. (occasional weekends)
