Central Queens Y is a 501(c)(3) non-profit community center serving over 10,000 persons of diverse backgrounds in Queens County. The CQY provides a continuum of social, recreational, and educational services for children, families and adults. For over two generations, the Central Queens Y, located in Forest Hills Queens, has been a special place for thousands of families, older adults, children and individuals who participate in its parenting, preschool, after school, cultural arts, camping, health and fitness, social services, and senior programming. 

STATEMENT OF THE JOB The Central Queens Y is looking for a well-qualified Creative Arts Group Facilitator who is passionate about helping youth/adolescents navigate their lives and futures, develop their social identities, and receive support while gaining leadership skills and awareness in order to be advocates for themselves and others. The facilitator will work within SAFE Program at John Bowne High School, which supports youth in becoming engaged in positive relationships, family, and community. As a Creative Arts Group Facilitator, you will instruct, lead, mentor, and motivate our students in 2-3 group settings focusing on a variety of topics such as: theater, improve, spoken word, poetry, creative writing, narrative therapy, scrapbooking, art therapy, slam poetry, lyric writing, beatboxing, music therapy, singing, movement, public speaking, etc. We are seeking an instructor who has created or is willing to create an exciting curriculum around any of these topics. We are seeking instructors who are dedicated, passionate, culturally aware, and professional with a positive attitude and dynamic personality to join our program. 


Establish rapport with youth and provide mentoring, guidance and overall direction for their leadership and social-emotional development
Develop plans, curriculum and facilitate creative arts group programming in a variety of the following topics: theater, improve, spoken word, poetry, creative writing, narrative therapy, scrapbooking, art therapy, slam poetry, lyric writing, beatboxing, music therapy, singing, movement, public speaking, etc.
Assist participants in identifying their social-emotional strengths and barriers, educational and career goals
Actively recruit program participants and ensure full participation in groups.
Monitor the attendance, academic, and social-emotional progress of participants on assigned caseload
Provide necessary referrals to community resources.
Work in a collaborative team, including participation in staff meetings, contractor meetings, and staff development in order to support student progress.
Maintain documentation of program activities and outcomes; submit timely program report

Bachelor’s Degree Required; Master's Degree a plus
Background in Social Work, Community Organizing, Creative Arts Therapy (LCAT), Performance Arts, Theater, Psychology, Mental Health Counseling (MHC) preferred


At least 1-2 years experience working with children, adolescents, and/or families
At least 1-2 years experience providing individual and group creative arts therapy
Workshop implementation experience preferred
Bi-lingual in Spanish a plus


Passionate about engaging youth in creative expression, and creating safe and supportive environment for young people to step outside of their comfort zones
Comfortable discussing a range of topics including identity, race, gender, class, culture, etc.
Experience in and passion for theater, improv, spoken word, music, art, hip hop a plus
Experience with workshop facilitation and program development
Knowledge and understanding of youth development, after school and public education in New York City
Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills
Ability to develop partnerships, work independently and in teams
Ability to multi-task, problem-solve and produce results in a fast-paced environment
Energized by the idea and process of creating and implementing new initiatives
Strong writing and oral communication skills
Highly organized, detail oriented, punctual, and trustworthy
Bilingual in Spanish language a plus
Demonstrate cultural competency through familiarity in working with people from a very diverse number of backgrounds

Salary : $25-30/hour (commensurate with experience) 
Hours: Part-Time, 2 hours per week 
Schedule : 1 day/week (during school day and/or afterschool hours; evening events as needed) 
Location : John Bowne High School (Flushing, Queens) 
Expected Start Date: October 2017
