Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead by Tom Stoppard

One Danish morning, two subjects are summoned to the royal court to serve a king who has newly come into power. Upon arriving, they learn that the prince has been acting dangerously strange. Has their childhood friend merely lost his mind, or is something more sinister afoot? Does this synopsis sound familiar? It should: in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, playwright Tom Stoppard retells Shakespeare's Hamlet from the limited point of view of two minor supporting characters, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, who become the hapless protagonists of an absurd tragicomedy. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead tackles agency, canonicity, and mortality with humor and feeling, proving that it might just be more fun at the margins of a classic than at the center.
