BTE Presents: Dreamgirls!

"Every man has his own special dream
And your dream is just about to come true ..."

For their Fall 2017 Musical Production, Black Theatre Ensemble's Presents: "Dreamgirls".

Dreamgirls follows six main characters at a crossroads. Between pop & soul, family & fame, passion & insanity--- Is this a dream or a nightmare? Effie White, Deena Jones, and Lorrell Robinson are part of the hottest act in the country called "The Dreams". The musical explores themes of black family, respectability politics, black masculinity, sisterhood, and the commodification of black culture.

Can C.C.'s passion for soul music survive the appropriation of white pop music? Can Jimmy hold onto his fiery, anything-goes stage presence as the music world cools off? Can Curtis see his vision come to light without becoming blind to those around him? Can Lorrell find her niche in the midst of the madness surrounding her "sisters" at center stage? Can Deena become the artist she truly wants to without her shine casting Effie in the shade? Can Effie hold on to her own sanity, see her own dreams come true with colorism, featuring, and respectability trying to bring her down?

Can the dreams of one of one co-exist with the dreams of many? Can The Dreams even co-exist with each other? What does it take to make a dream come true?

This event is sponsored in part by the Arts Initiative.
