About The Performance

Style: Merengue Típico
Dance Instructors: Desiree Godsell and Alex Morel

All summer long, ¡VAYA! honors NYC’s rich traditions of Latin dance and music with movement instruction and concerts tailored for dancers of every skill level. Following basic dance instruction from performer Talia Castro-Pozo, take a deep breath and leap into the fast-paced and complexly-syncopated rhythms of the MaxBanda ensemble’s interpretation of merengue típico. Indigenous to the Cibao region, merengue tipico is the originator of merengue in the Dominican Republic. Queens native Max “El Swing de New York” Rodriguez leads his highly-polished band through a sparkling set of classic and new songs played in the Dominican traditional style: driven by saxophone, accordion, güira y tambora and spirited, sweet vocals.
